ECHOING PAST MARZIALE
The sun sets on the manor when Tatara seeks out Akira, Kurapika, Syrlya, Kiryu, and Mòrag individually and brings them all outside, saying they've been summoned.
When they step outside, they will quickly see why: dressed in the royal blues and golds of the Granvelle family is an entourage waiting for them on horseback. Among the multitude of castle guards are two distinguished-looking gentlemen that everyone here will have seen at the ball. One, a shorter, portly man, leaps from his horse when he sees the wizards emerge, while the taller of the two remains perched atop his white horse to watch in silence.
"Good! You decided to show yourselves," the man says. He remains professional, but there is a hint of distrust in his eyes. "I am Drummond, Minister of Arcane Management at Granvelle Castle, and we have summoned you today to fulfill a direct request of ours.
"We believe the the castle is experiencing—don't laugh!—a haunting to a degree never before recorded or spoken of. It is simply unbearable to be there after dark. It is so much worse in the lower levels of the castle. Too many of our staff are flat-out refusing to come to work, and the situation is growing dire.
"We believe a magical artifact located somewhere in our vault is causing this. Locate this item and neutralize it."
He gestures to five horses, saddled with no riders.
"You will be coming with us back to the castle. Chop-chop! We don't have all night."

OOC NOTES
Welcome, Central wizards (and witch), to your mission!
Missions are mod-guided events that are partial CYOA, partial play-by-post instances. In general, you are free to interact with a scene as you please, and the mod will tell you how the scene reacts as a consequence of your actions. Some scenes will allow for more flexible threading, such as exploration or conversation, while some scenes will require strict turn order to preserve rounds, such as combat or other time-sensitive conflict. The mod will inform you if strict turn order is required at the start of a scene. Regardless, always be sure to bold any important actions you take.
This mission has been specifically tailored to Central disposition, attitudes, and magic. If you find yourself struggling to tackle a situation, refresh yourself on the description of Central on the locations page, and make sure to confer with your teammates too!
As a bonus, here's your theme music!
You will have until 11:59 AM EDT on Saturday, May 4 to reach a conclusion for this mission. Good luck!

[Akira upturns his palm with a flourish and summons a ball of glowing black fire. Eerie purple light is perfect for the occasion, no? It's better than nothing!]
no subject
Ah. Not bad, Akira.
[ At least they can all see now! ]
I wonder how long this corridor goes.
no subject
[Or at least he assumes, really! It'd make sense]

As they walk, leaving the warm spring evening behind them, they'll find the air in the castle to be unnaturally cold, heavy. Their footsteps echo loud in the eerie silence. Whether they like it or not, a faint unease pricks their skin—just the sort of atmosphere one might expect from a haunted castle, indeed.
As their eyes adjust to the darkness and Akira's light illuminates the stone walls, they'll find that there are, in fact, candles lit in sparse intervals along the wall, but they barely seem to work. Good thing for magic, huh?
Before they know it, though, the corridor opens up onto the great entrance hall. There are a few more candles here, and in concert with Akira's flame, they are enough to illuminate the room: a grand, red carpeted staircase swoops upwards on the left, while the corridor continues straight ahead.
However, they are not alone.
Out of nowhere, a dark, shadowy figure manifests before them, blocking the way. As it does, two poof into existence at the base of the stairs, and an additional two more appear, one each at either upper level of the split staircase. ]
Stop! Go no further! [ The shadowy figure before them calls, their voice echoey and disembodied. No mouth seems to move as they speak. ] We will not allow uninvited guests to get any closer to Ser Alec!
[ There are five ghosts in this room, though only one blocks your way. What do you do?

[Now, ostensibly, their mission here requires dealing with these things, with Extreme Prejudice as necessary... but their erstwhile employers had shed so much credibility in her mind that a little discussion isn't off the table here. The trick is, of course, to set the proper tone.]
We are wizards retained to deal with this precise situation. We are prepared to engage in understanding and diplomacy. Explain your presence and activities here, or take us to one who can.
no subject
Not to worry, one of our members is familiar with Ser Alec. [And then he reaches to try and nudge Akira forward. They mistook him last time, maybe that will work again.] We're here to assist.
no subject
People are worried about Ser Alec. Given the current situation, we've come to confirm his status.
no subject
Improvising isn’t exactly his strong suit, so he’ll leave that part to the others unless he gets singled out, merely crossing his arms and nodding at what they all say. ]

The two of them share a glance, one seemingly muttering "I thought he was taller...?", but something that might be recognition crosses their faces as they address Akira. There's still a heavy suspicion in their voice, though, as they can't afford to slack with their security.]
Can we be sure it's truly you? You do look quite a bit like Ser Lennox, but times being what they are...
[They need a bit more lore to their LARPing before they're satisfied, but they should know a few things to sprinkle in.]
no subject
[Fortunately, she has better targets to turn her irritation on.]
You doubt our word?
no subject
I understand your apprehension, especially considering the situation afield. Times being what they are, I praise your caution.
[Breathe in, breathe out.]
The troops are waiting for their word to move out. If Ser Alec is incapable of giving the word, perhaps Ser Faust is?
no subject
They seem more at ease with the mention of Faust, relaxing incrementally. The one in front of them seems to pause for a moment, looking briefly stricken, while the rest lower their arms—the ghosts were carrying weapons, as any good soldier would.]
We have not heard from Ser Faust for quite some time—he has been busy since returning with Lord Figaro, as I'm sure you've noticed.
[He sighs, glancing back at his Ghost Posse.]
With wizards like you around I know we have less to fear, but I am not sure we can let your... companions pass without knowing where they come from, Ser Lennox. They are on our side, aren't they?
no subject
[Hangs head in mock concern............
Akira recovers quickly, straightening up and shaking his head as if to push his totally real concerns for Faust's wellbeing out of mind so he can focus on the matter at hand. He steps to one side and sweeps out an arm, gesturing first to Morag.]
Allow me to introduce you to my trusted companions. This is special Inquisitor Lady Morag. To her left is my tactician Syrlya. Ser Kiryu came to me from lands unknown but has since become a loyal and indispensable friend known best for his flaming fists, and finally...
[He turns to Kurapika.]
This is Kurapika the Terrible. Don't let his name fool you— with him on our side, the battle is as good as won.

no subject
But for now, Kurapika nods, keeping his face carefully neutral despite the irritation at that nickname bubbling up in his chest. It's so over for Akira.
Thankfully, Morag speaking next gives him a bit more time to compose himself. ]
That's right. I hope that clears things up for you.
