western mission
A PHANTASMAL DIVERTIMENTO
It's an early morning for the manor when Tatara and G'raha gather the western wizards, an envelop in Tatara's hand. Even at a glance it's clear the letter is from someone quite official, the Western country's emblem emblazoned on it. G'raha looks pensive, but Tatara seems.. unsurprised.
He holds up the envelope, gesturing with it. "We've got a request from the Western military. Seems there's an issue going on at some noble's estate that could be quite dangerous."
(But why isn't the military handling it themselves?)
Tatara takes the letter out from its envelope, reading it out for the wizards. The contents are as follows:
"There's something strange about this request," G'raha says, arms crossed over his chest. "I feel like there's something the General isn't telling us, but I can't say for sure as I've not met the man."
Tatara nods, handing the letter over for the wizards to take. "Do your best to come back in one piece."
The two will walk with them to the elevator, Tatara placing a mana stone into the panel and sending them off to the West. There are directions to the estate included with the letter Tatara handed over, so they should know where they're going.

To the "Western" wizards of the Sage,
I've come to know a few of you wizards who claim to hail from worlds far from this one, and while I am loath to trust anyone with a task concerning national safety, I believe it could be a mutually beneficial thing for us. There are reports of missing people, all of whom were last seen at the the Schropfer Estate just outside the City of Foam, as well as reports of inhuman screams and beasts lurking around the area.
The Schropfers have recently hired on someone who claims to be able to raise the dead, and people are quite adamant that he is able to. That sounds like magic to me, which means it may be just the job for a wizard to handle. If you can take care of this, there will be compensation.
Regards, Gen. Gilles Barnett.

OOC NOTES
Welcome, Western wizards, to your mission!
Missions are mod-guided events that are partial CYOA, partial play-by-post instances. In general, you are free to interact with a scene as you please, and the mod will tell you how the scene reacts as a consequence of your actions. Some scenes will allow for more flexible threading, such as exploration or conversation, while some scenes will require strict turn order to preserve rounds, such as combat or other time-sensitive conflict. The mod will inform you if strict turn order is required at the start of a scene. Regardless, always be sure to bold any important actions you take.
This mission has been specifically tailored to Western disposition, attitudes, and magic. If you find yourself struggling to tackle a situation, refresh yourself on the description of the West on the locations page, and make sure to confer with your teammates too!
As a bonus, here's your theme music!
You will have until 11:59 AM EDT on Saturday, June 15 to reach a conclusion for this mission. Good luck!

Anyway, Jing Yuan still isn't exactly going to rush into the room, because he doesn't feel like he should necessarily change things up, so...
Instead of grabbing a hold of the door, he will step to the side out of the general path of the door. Then, he will use a simple wind spell to turn the doorknob slowly and carefully, before using said wind spell to also open the door carefully.
What happens? ]
no subject
But several of the couches are turned on their side, cushions slashed, and a body lies close to the door. It looks human and untransformed, but it's so mangled the only thing recognizable about it is blonde hair.
Another body lays in a crumpled heap further into the room, and besides it something skeletal and inhuman stands, staring vacantly at the walls. If he focuses, Jing Yuan can tell that it is entirely magical, and it hasn't noticed them. Yet.]
no subject
...but he rolled a 3. the good news is he has his shields up this time! and that presumably someone will follow up with something actually useful. this is what he gets for not actually killing a man in like three months, his rust... ]
no subject
Jing Yuan will slam it with holy beam with a transformation aspect to it that aims to turn magic skelly completely or partially into dust (13) since it is a positive(ly) inclined roll it probably does something instead of nothing.
Look man, he is attempting the adage 'work smarter, not harder'. ]
no subject
Jing Yuan's spell hits, but he'll want to move quickly as he will find the spell reflecting back towards him. The skeletal creature lurches, but it's not very fast, at least. They will have time to react again before it reaches anyone to attack.]
no subject
We must needs locate the “lantern” and quickly.
[With that, he motions for his star globe to float up and illuminate the room. With the aid of light, he’s going to look for any mirrors, paintings, or any other conspicuous areas that might be hiding a machine.]
no subject
[Hard light projections?? That's some really hard light to handle.
Cid decides not to continue his thought and instead go with what Urianger's talking about, because they were thinking that anyway, weren't they? Instead of moving, though, he's going to do two things:
1. A series of dark tentacles snake out of his shadow; they're going to try and poke holes in the walls where there's anything suspicious. They'll try to avoid flipping furniture or running into bodies but look. They're tentacles. He's kind of busy.
2. He flicks something dark and round with his fingers (20); can hard light skellies reflect or otherwise deal with magically imbued projectiles (AKA, magic bullet)? Time to find out. He's going for a headshot because why not.]
Sorry 'bout the mess.
no subject
So he will step out of the way of the reflected spell; his reflexes are good enough for that.
Also, he tried to move one of the couches in the way via wind spell to attack the skeleton creature, but that didn't work too well (2) ]
no subject
since khun can detect that's magical, just to cover all their bases, he pulls out this jackalope foot he's been holding onto forever and just beans it at the not!skelly.
he rolled a 4 but tbh he's not trying to injure it, just see if it will reflect regularly thrown things. usually his aim is good but random parts of animals aren't pointy weapons who knew.
maybe his luck will be better now... ]
no subject
Meanwhile, there's an awful screech as the couch gets jostled a few inches by Jing Yuan's spell, but he was at least able to dodge the blast.
Cid might not be so lucky, however, as that magic bullet hits the skelly and... bounces right back at him. Should have hoped for a worse roll, Cid, because good luck dodging a 20.
Damaging it doesn't seem like it will be successful, but there has to be other things they can do with their magic, right? Right???
But while the three stooges are figuring that out, Urianger has his eyes on the prize. There's a large painting on one of the interior walls of the room, and while it's hard to see at a glance, upon closer inspection he will find a lens incorporated into the jewels the painting's subject is wearing. He's found one of the lanterns Elizabeta mentioned.]
no subject
[As he’s informing the others, he spots Cid’s amazing display…only for the bullet to be reflected.
Provided he has the time, he quickly pivots to reinforce Cid’s barrier. Hopefully it can take the blow!]
no subject
[Cid sounds rather put-upon, but then it wasn't really out of the question for hard light to reflect hard shadow(??) so might as well deal with it.
He's going to try another two (2) methods!
1. Calling back his tentacles to wrap them all the way around him in a big whirlwind of shadow and something or other. Since these are made from the same material as the bullet, it'll probably cancel each other out? At the very least between the double barriers perhaps it'll neutralize things. (14)
2. He also transforms himself into the smallest object he can think of, so the entire shadow ensemble drops down and pools out around whatever-it-is.]
no subject
[ i'd love to say that khun sees that urianger is covering Cid so he focuses on the lens instead, but in reality he focuses on the lens instead because his priorities.
he's familiar with how lens and their tech work, so he throws up an illumination of a star (13) in front of the painting to distort lens' view, hopefully causing the skellyton to spin in circles or something else silly.
also he's going behind the couch in case that bullet ricochets. ]
no subject
Anyways, nuts aside.
The light blasted into the lens does seem to do the trick, the skelly turning towards the lighthouse in jittery motions before
passing out refreshersit collapses into a pile of bones. It twitches and rattles for a moment, so it's likely not a permanent solution, but it is currently out of commission. So, now they have more time to check out the room! Congratulations!]
no subject
Once everything seems to settle down and the coast is clear, he decides to lift the couch with magic successfully this time and puts it temporarily on the pile of bones to buy time just in case. It's heavy and will slow shit down.
Anyway, anything else notable about the room besides the lens in painting? Either way, he says: ]
That mechanism should be destroyed. Hopefully to ensure this thing is taken out permanently.
[ Ideally that is what should happen when it is, though he thinks there is only one way to find out. ]
no subject
Mechanism? Well, check for if it's connected first or we'll have to escape a boulder!
no subject
We can just disable it to be safe. [ before he makes an attempt can he probe the setup of the lens/machinery with his magic senses? anything going on here like more reflective magic he should be worrying about?
he'll look visually too since tech is familiar to him even if it's usually more advanced than this. ]
no subject
Which is to say destroying the lens of this lantern will not do much of anything, as Khun can tell that it's connected to other machinery in some sort of magical network and attempting to destroy it here is likely to cause a chain of events that won't end well for them. It's something where they have to tackle this problem at the source of the corrupted-feeling magic.
If only they could get some helpers, that would make things much easier...]
no subject
anyway, khun will continue to familiarize himself with the lens and workings as he can while ordering people around. ]
Looks like we can't break it from here. Can two of you check out the bodies? They might have something useful on them.
Try not to step on Cid.
no subject
[If they're still alive and have their faculties, they should also be evacuated. And maybe they'll even have more information. They've probably worked closely with this guy, after all.
With that said, Urianger crouches down to examine the body near the door. Is there anything he can tell about the identity of this person? Do they have anything on them that might aid the party?]
no subject
Anything noteworthy other the appearance? Does it look like there's going to be something retrievable from this at all? Like if the dead person has pockets or anything within said person's pockets?
Jing Yuan isn't above rooting through a dead body for things, though he definitely quickly made some gloves from magic sourced from a rock so he doesn't get blood all over his hands. ]

She has several deep wounds that appear to come from a beast's claws, and it looks like it could be a match to the skeleton under the couch. She has little on her, but Urianger will be able to find a set of keys that seem the right size and shapes for doors as opposed to being a set of keys for drawers or chests or secret treasures.]

[The (normal-sized) peanut is talking.
Or rather, the mass of shadowy something-or-other is talking, and then the peanut pops up. As insurance anyone that stepped near the peanut would have gotten slapped by shadow tentacles. It's all good.
Cid finally turns back into himself once the coast seems to be clear. Also reabsorbs the bullet into his shadow, wherever it ended up. Yawns and looks around. Also if he stabs the ceiling here does it also bounce.]
Could have been worse, I guess.
[That sure happened. Is there anything magical or physical if he snoops haphazardly around the rest of the room?]

I understand this logic, but where would a boulder be hidden away inside an estate...?

[ Yeah. That's it. ]
