western mission
A PHANTASMAL DIVERTIMENTO
It's an early morning for the manor when Tatara and G'raha gather the western wizards, an envelop in Tatara's hand. Even at a glance it's clear the letter is from someone quite official, the Western country's emblem emblazoned on it. G'raha looks pensive, but Tatara seems.. unsurprised.
He holds up the envelope, gesturing with it. "We've got a request from the Western military. Seems there's an issue going on at some noble's estate that could be quite dangerous."
(But why isn't the military handling it themselves?)
Tatara takes the letter out from its envelope, reading it out for the wizards. The contents are as follows:
"There's something strange about this request," G'raha says, arms crossed over his chest. "I feel like there's something the General isn't telling us, but I can't say for sure as I've not met the man."
Tatara nods, handing the letter over for the wizards to take. "Do your best to come back in one piece."
The two will walk with them to the elevator, Tatara placing a mana stone into the panel and sending them off to the West. There are directions to the estate included with the letter Tatara handed over, so they should know where they're going.

To the "Western" wizards of the Sage,
I've come to know a few of you wizards who claim to hail from worlds far from this one, and while I am loath to trust anyone with a task concerning national safety, I believe it could be a mutually beneficial thing for us. There are reports of missing people, all of whom were last seen at the the Schropfer Estate just outside the City of Foam, as well as reports of inhuman screams and beasts lurking around the area.
The Schropfers have recently hired on someone who claims to be able to raise the dead, and people are quite adamant that he is able to. That sounds like magic to me, which means it may be just the job for a wizard to handle. If you can take care of this, there will be compensation.
Regards, Gen. Gilles Barnett.

OOC NOTES
Welcome, Western wizards, to your mission!
Missions are mod-guided events that are partial CYOA, partial play-by-post instances. In general, you are free to interact with a scene as you please, and the mod will tell you how the scene reacts as a consequence of your actions. Some scenes will allow for more flexible threading, such as exploration or conversation, while some scenes will require strict turn order to preserve rounds, such as combat or other time-sensitive conflict. The mod will inform you if strict turn order is required at the start of a scene. Regardless, always be sure to bold any important actions you take.
This mission has been specifically tailored to Western disposition, attitudes, and magic. If you find yourself struggling to tackle a situation, refresh yourself on the description of the West on the locations page, and make sure to confer with your teammates too!
As a bonus, here's your theme music!
You will have until 11:59 AM EDT on Saturday, June 15 to reach a conclusion for this mission. Good luck!

There's another specter in that sun room, a hunched figure draped in a dark cloak (Cid's doppelgänger??), and it lets out a ghastly shriek once they enter. The shriek feels like it reverberates through their skulls, but it doesn't hinder or hurt them at all (considering I rolled a two). The specter lurches at them, swiping at Jing Yuan... but it doesn't quite manage to do much of anything (because I rolled a four).
With Khun's constant scanning, he can get a sense for where the lantern it spawned from is quite instantly, and he'll also be able to follow the trail of magic. The lanterns feel like they're feeding off of magic, and the root of it is directly above the sun room.]
no subject
The lantern's above us. We need to be extra thorough here because it might be guarding something. [ or maybe it just likes the ambiance. anyhoo, he's using his lighthouse to discombobulate the specter with a light spell like he did earlier (18). ]
no subject
Hmm...above us. In the room, or simply upstairs?
[ Jing Yuan is an incredibly quick man despite his build/height so he puts distance between himself in skelly to do some searching. Some questions:
1. Is there something that looks off about the ceiling in general appearance-wise besides pings?
2. Khun stated that the lanterns are situated above them, though for the location of the lens, is that also apparent in the same direction as above, or is there somewhere that makes it clear there is an old painting/fixture where something like a lens/something else odd can be discerned whether by eyesight because there is just so much lighting here? Jing Yuan is using his eyes and magic pinging for this. ]
no subject
[Don't mind Cid muttering to himself as he steers clear of Jing Yuan steering clear and scuttles out of the way of Khun doing Khun things to the ceiling (the ceiling is evil). For the most part he is just a Cid in Shadow's clothing right now, so he still sounds and moves normally. It's fine. There will be a time for dramatics later, during the final confrontation? Maybe.
Right now he'll put out a hand to direct his tentacles (not really needed, but you've got to have some dramatic effect and all) -- let's see if the terrible ghastly specter that definitely doesn't look at all like him, rude, is able to reflect corporeal darkness rearing up and trying to bind it down, and also stabbing it for good measure if that's possible (19).]
Is it just a lantern or more stuff?
[See: the ceiling is evil, etc.]
no subject
The ceiling looks perfectly normal, but Jing Yuan can see a crooked mirror on the wall the sun room shares with the dining room that looks about right to hide a contraption.
Discombobulating the specter does buy them some extra time to figure things out, at least, the wraith flapping its arms and flailing around in a circle while it shrieks (12!!). They all feel a sensation of vertigo and should be careful lest they lose their balance, and fall right on their asses.]
no subject
He has to take a moment for the vertigo which hits after, but Jing Yuan is good at dealing with attacks to his body and mind for all the wrong (right) reasons, directing his focus on what he sees. ]
On the wall shared with the dining room, there's a mirror!
[ He checks out the wall, trying to see if:
1. There's any bad news/reflective nonsense magic vibes about this crooked mirror.
If no to 1:
2. Can he move it with a strong wind spell?
If yes to 1:
3. Can he move it with his hands? Specter is going to be a pain in the ass otherwise. ]
no subject
It feels like the root of this mess is the room above us. [ as for the mirror, after jing yuan's done with his attempts if that hasn't disabled it, he's going to cast ice around the mirror, careful not to actually touch it. this ice is the opaque kind so it shouldn't provide any real visibility. ]
no subject
Aw, come on. At this rate, your boss's going to be the biggest disappointment.
[Cid just sounds put-upon, sort of like when they were first discussing desecrating the dead, because perhaps he cursed himself but the dead sure are!! Desecrating him!! Right back!!
Not entirely literally, so it's probably fine. With a huff he infuses more magic into his cloak -- as always, both the cloak and the tentacles are made of the same material, so it's really just down to the amount of magic in each (15); so it's probably like, mitigatable but annoying. He'll also work on parrying the damn hard light tentacles(????) (this is the shittiest light vs. dark) using a dark sword that just grows out of his sleeve too I guess, and if all else fails he'll use his hand to stop any stabbities. Might as well get slightly sliced up instead of totally!]
no subject
Between Jing Yuan's shield and Peanut's attempts to block the damage, he manages to get away with minimal stab wounds! Congratulations! The chuuni gets to live another day.
They are now free to look through more of the sun room, though there's not much to be found in it, or continue on to the rest of the floor.]
no subject
Hm. Alright, let's continue onwards, provided everyone is in the right shape to be.
[ Jing Yuan throws Cid a very basic heal because that's good enough, but it should help for his minimal-level wounds. Sometimes, going hard in your magic training every day has its benefits, and generally his pool of magic is just large.
Also, he will be as always moving head. While also treading cautiously, ensuring to keep his illusions up, checking for magic pings, or otherwise not walking into super dark places/rooms just yet. He's gonna be relying on the others for lighting things, but yeah. ]
no subject
anyway ditto to the above in that khun's going to approach the rest of the rooms as he did this one, with scanning and general caution. he will, despite his asshole-ish behavior, keep an eye on their lovely peanut just to make sure he doesn't need an actual heal. ]
no subject
[That's probably not his motivation for not dodging properly!! Probably.
Cid just sort of pats himself down, he was probably just going to walk it off or minor self-heal or whatever but he'll take some peanuts of team spirit™ and magic conservation where he can get them. Either way, neither it nor the momentary discombobulation from before seem to slow him down any as he brings up the rear.
He's a bit more careful with his shadows, since apparently anything that could be construed as an attack is either off-limits or just literally a pain in the ass -- but he nevertheless keeps all magic and physical senses heightened and on alert for whatever.
He cannot help with the lighting as a being of darkness but he'll extend some tentacles to check things out with the vanguard.]

The kitchen is another story—still specter-less, but upon entering the room the cabinets all fling open (for ambiance), but a more real threat appears as knives, pots, pans, and all sorts of utensils fly off the walls, shelves, out of drawers and fly towards the wizards (19!). They're still shielded, of course, but they have a split second to react to avoid harm entirely. Do your best, little wizzies...]
no subject
It's probable most likely he doesn't have the time to do much else given the short span of reaction time, but everyone is shielded, so...
(But in the worst case scenario he will provide heals as necessary.) ]
no subject
if it eats through his shield that's fine, he definitely knows how to pivot to take superficial damage when he needs to. ]
no subject
Wait, those are the same thing. Heck.
His shadow tentacles rear up from the ground; there's enough of them to slap away an middling amount of cutlery (11), though he's mostly got the time to focus on himself rather than the others under the ambush. After getting reverse sliced, though, it could be worse. Probably. Some knocks and fork stabs and who-knows-what are just the price of not becoming a meal.]
I'm really startin' to get tired of this hospitality we're getting.
[Somewhere in his noggin he's really thinking about blowing up this house. Anyway, he'll drop down to the ground after the initial onslaught and check what magic's out here trying to cook them. Also if there's anything interesting in the cabinets. Important matters.]
no subject
There's three guesses for where the magic is going, and the first two don't count.
Cid (Peanut?) can thoroughly check the cabinets, though most of the contents are on the floor now. He can find some baked treats, though they're a little stale. Still, free pastries!
There's another pantry in the kitchen that looks like it's been torn apart by a starving bear, and at the far end, the most eastern end of the kitchen, a locked door...
OOCly, I can tell you this door leads to the same room that the wizardracist Leo and Urianger are dealing with is in. ICly they won't know this, but they may be able to faintly hear conversation.
They have two options: cycle back around and join up with the others, or see if they'll have any luck forcing open this door with the magic receding...
(Which definitely does not mean the final boss is powering up. Definitely not the case.)]
no subject
He frowns, in disapproval at this. ]
Hmm.
It seems we've no longer to contend with nonsense here. Though, it may not exactly be all for the better.
[ The urge to blow this place up is also mutual, so it's no big deal. More importantly, though: ]
It seems this might be the end of the road for now. We've a locked door in front of us to potentially explore which may lead somewhere fruitful based upon the voices or we can circle back to the others.
no subject
[ like it's faint but is that singing? why??? ]
no subject
Sometimes you just need to abuse some baked goods.
That said, Cid blinks up at the ceiling and then at the door, nonplussed. Right, the boss fight... like the tide pulling back before smashing you in the face... except considerably gloomier and with a worse view. The music isn't bad, even if it is completely out of genre.]
Um. Magical singing??
[They have at least one magical singer, right. Now they know Leo's back. The boss also probably knows Leo's back, but that's neither here nor there.]
no subject
Yes, it appears so...
[ Jing Yuan isn't exactly wholly surprised about the state of things with a certain member of their group, not going to lie.
If Leo is singing then he's fine, but also he's a good singer...anyway he is going to make movements to regroup with the others. ]
We should head back, however.
