western mission
A PHANTASMAL DIVERTIMENTO
It's an early morning for the manor when Tatara and G'raha gather the western wizards, an envelop in Tatara's hand. Even at a glance it's clear the letter is from someone quite official, the Western country's emblem emblazoned on it. G'raha looks pensive, but Tatara seems.. unsurprised.
He holds up the envelope, gesturing with it. "We've got a request from the Western military. Seems there's an issue going on at some noble's estate that could be quite dangerous."
(But why isn't the military handling it themselves?)
Tatara takes the letter out from its envelope, reading it out for the wizards. The contents are as follows:
"There's something strange about this request," G'raha says, arms crossed over his chest. "I feel like there's something the General isn't telling us, but I can't say for sure as I've not met the man."
Tatara nods, handing the letter over for the wizards to take. "Do your best to come back in one piece."
The two will walk with them to the elevator, Tatara placing a mana stone into the panel and sending them off to the West. There are directions to the estate included with the letter Tatara handed over, so they should know where they're going.

To the "Western" wizards of the Sage,
I've come to know a few of you wizards who claim to hail from worlds far from this one, and while I am loath to trust anyone with a task concerning national safety, I believe it could be a mutually beneficial thing for us. There are reports of missing people, all of whom were last seen at the the Schropfer Estate just outside the City of Foam, as well as reports of inhuman screams and beasts lurking around the area.
The Schropfers have recently hired on someone who claims to be able to raise the dead, and people are quite adamant that he is able to. That sounds like magic to me, which means it may be just the job for a wizard to handle. If you can take care of this, there will be compensation.
Regards, Gen. Gilles Barnett.

OOC NOTES
Welcome, Western wizards, to your mission!
Missions are mod-guided events that are partial CYOA, partial play-by-post instances. In general, you are free to interact with a scene as you please, and the mod will tell you how the scene reacts as a consequence of your actions. Some scenes will allow for more flexible threading, such as exploration or conversation, while some scenes will require strict turn order to preserve rounds, such as combat or other time-sensitive conflict. The mod will inform you if strict turn order is required at the start of a scene. Regardless, always be sure to bold any important actions you take.
This mission has been specifically tailored to Western disposition, attitudes, and magic. If you find yourself struggling to tackle a situation, refresh yourself on the description of the West on the locations page, and make sure to confer with your teammates too!
As a bonus, here's your theme music!
You will have until 11:59 AM EDT on Saturday, June 15 to reach a conclusion for this mission. Good luck!

He looks over at Cid, half-outraged and half-not wanting to get killed, but...]
I haven't seen anyone! A lot of the troupe was out in town picking up supplies because Philidor decided he wanted to change all of our costumes, but it's not like we have a surplus of fabric in here!
[This is someone's home, not a fabric store.
He huffs.]
Once I heard the screaming I tried to block off every way to get to me, because I didn't want to get killed!
[Looking around the quarters, they'll find no traces of lanterns or lenses, even though there are a few mirrors around for the actors to use to get ready. This is one of the neater areas of the mansion, with trunks and dresses pulled and pushed around to block off doors and the small staircase leading upstairs. There are various props for the show around the room—candelabras, cosmetics, bits and pieces of costumes and things like fake knives and fake blood. A heap of sewing notions and fabric scraps rests on one of the trunks, looking like someone was in the middle of a project which does lend some credence to his claims.
The staircase, however, has traces of lingering magic. It's faint, but as they approach it feels like the same curse that's on the front staircase. It's not as strong, so it might be possible to break the curse on it. That's not the only way upstairs, though, as right across from the stairs is a dumbwaiter. It's on the larger end as far as dumbwaiters go, so while it's unlikely that they could all go up together in one go, they could probably manage two or three at a time without putting too much strain on the pulleys and without having to contort themselves too badly.]
I don't know anything else, so just let me get out of here...

He lifts his star globe up towards the wolfman and passes a small barrier onto him. It's got a comforting warmth to it, so as to patch up any budding bruises caused by the fall.]
Thou mayest take thy leave. Pray locate Mistress Elizabeta outside. We shall carry on from hither.
[With that, Urianger stars scouting out the room, eyeing the staircase.]
The magic applied to this staircase appeareth weaker than that of the primary staircase.
no subject
There's no magic over here~! Hey, isn't this one of those fancy things they use in murder mysteries?
no subject
[In response to the withering look Cid throws up a double thumbs-up at Urianger kind of like they're cinching a play in football or something -- it's been a while since he did a good cop-bad cop routine, mostly because everyone in Shadow Garden is some variety of bad cop, badder cop, baddest cop.
Maybe he needs to reflect on their upbringing...... but now's not the time for that.
Once the teamwork is concluded along with the woof's dignity and so forth, he's going to sidle over to the dumbwaiter as well, peering at it.]
I mean, it's normal to have it in a noble's house, but I guess that makes it part of a lot of murder mysteries too...?
[Just going to toss a baked good onto it to test if it's going to like. Eat them or something.]
no subject
[ something something tower of god.
hmm.. khuns gonna split off a small piece of his lighthouse to go for a ride with the baked good. jamming the button to send it up!!! ]
no subject
He just watches things happen otherwise and yawns. ]
Let's see how well it works, then.
no subject
And poor Cid, because the woof just shoots him a dirty look and scampers to the door without answering him. Maybe he'd have been more helpful if you were nicer!! (Incredibly unlikely.)
The pastry sits in the dumbwaiter, untouched, as the pulleys creak loudly. Slowly, the dumbwaiter creeps upward, before there's a loud mechanical whine and the whole thing stalls. It seems to not be getting enough power to move, likely because it's all being funneled off for reasons unknown. Still, it's functional enough that with magic they could get it moving with ease.
Or they can take the stairs with Urianger. Both options are on the table.]
no subject
We have two options before us. According to Urianger, the staircase has a weakened version of that troublesome nonsense encountered earlier; though it could also become quite a risk if we were caught using it and it was amplified accordingly.
Now, we have the...dumbwaiter, I suppose. Unguarded, with no troublesome aspects beyond the fact it needs to be powered, I imagine.
[ Jing Yuan is saying them aloud, though he thinks the preference might be clear in general from his younger Westies (all of you are younger to him, though...) ]
no subject
[ Why though. But yeah, that's Leo's vote... ]
no subject
I can get the dumbwaiter working again. I have an item from the Tower that'll take care of it for us. [ fight me time to use the suspendium pulley ]
We'll need to figure out how many of us are going and in what form.
no subject
[Cid looks back and forth between the dumbwaiter and the stairs. On the one hand, there's the matter of making an entrance -- if he were going full Eminence right off, he'd want to take the stairs for better flourish. On the other hand, his enemy is probably all cooped up like some kind of hikkikomori and won't even see that yet.
In which case, pulling up on the dumbwaiter and playing at secret murder fruit basket agents or whatever may be a more stylish way to go.
Don't mind him standing here literally making weighing hands.]
How many can fit over there?
[Nods at the dumbwaiter.]
no subject
Very well. I shall ascend the stairs.
[But not as a decoy. He can probably get through this weaker curse.]
no subject
That depends. The enemy can have the ability to assault equally on both fronts, giving that he has consolidated his power more upstairs than downstairs now.
As in, once he notices movement on two fronts, that will end up stalling even a divide and conquer plan. We've also already split up once before though I do not feel inclined to do so in this case.
[ Not to mention, he turns towards Urianger: ]
...In addition, while the curse can be dealt with, there is entirely the possibility of encountering another specter positioned right at the top of the stairs. If our enemy is intelligent, and consolidating his power further, the chances of that are high, alongside the considerable stronger magic being funneled into such creatures. Which would make reaching a lens or mirror to disable such an enemy difficult.
In the end choosing the dumbwaiter for us all may evade these problems entirely. What do you think?
[ Jing Yuan then addresses Cid: ]
As for how many, that depends on our imagination and capability when it comes to transformation magic.
no subject
[ he's honestly fine with either but he has to argue this point.
also can't wait for this to injure urianger and then itha to find this out it's fine ]no subject
[ Jing Yuan will argue back. It's fine, they can chat about it... ]
no subject
[ like plz he doubts this guy is him with being pedantic about everything. ]
Right now we have three for going up in the dumbwaiter, so just decide what you and Urianger are doing.
no subject
[ Khun can have his doubts, Jing Yuan will gladly have his own. ]
Either way, I already made my decision to come along clear. Urianger?
no subject
He takes a breath, then nods and steps over to the dumbwaiter.]
Let us make ourselves small so as to ascend together.
no subject
[ dumbwaiter party it is!
khun thinks about it a moment and then transforms himself in a (russian) blue cat and hops inside. he'll raise them up on the pulley once everyone's in. ]
no subject
no subject
[ Jing Yuan hops in looking exactly like the cat in this icon.
This is serious business. ]

The suspendium pulley begins to pull up the dumbwaiter, which seems to not be haunted at all, and the ascent is quick. There's only one floor to go up, and once they reach the next floor they can feel a shift in the atmosphere. The air is heavy with anxiety and dread, and there's a chill that feels like it pierces down through your bones. It eats at your barriers and protection charms, but it doesn't break through them yet. The halls are dark, but there's not much in their way as far as they can tell. It's hard to differentiate magic with how corrupted everything on this floor feels.
So, are they moving forward?]
no subject
Once they reach the second floor, the elf owl flaps out of the dumbwaiter and into the hall, immediately shifting back into a much larger variety of elf. It feels so very wrong in here. However, he has endured worse. He can endure this too.
He withdraws his star globe and makes it emit enough light for them to work with so they're not completely in the dark, glancing toward the others.]
