southern mission

CALANDO OF WITHERING AMBER
It's mid-morning, with the sun rising high into a bright, cloudless sky, that Tatara summons Bruno, Comet, Maya, Yodarha, and Joyous Day to the manor elevator. It's urgent, he tells them with that soft smile on his face, and your services are needed.

When you arrive at the elevator, standing there to greet you is a young man, finely dressed and with kind eyes; that his mop of brown hair is slightly unkempt is not the only giveaway that he's incredibly stressed. He stands with his shoulders tensed, and almost flinches when he sees you.

"It's...a pleasure," he begins, hesitant at first. But when he inhales, squares his shoulders, he finally looks more like a government official than a meek boy. "My name is Cock Robin, and I am a secretary from the Central castle. On behalf of the minister of arcane management, there's an urgent request for you."

From his thick folder, he pulls out one paper—worn and handwritten. He glances it over briefly before handing it to Joyous Day.

"A town in the southern part of the Southern Country has been having problems with its crops. It seems there's some sort of...sickness that's taken hold of the plants that's spreading rapidly, and they can't seem to find a cure. The only thing they haven't tried is magic. That's where you come in.

"Find the source of the sickness and neutralize it before it destroys their crops. The South is already inhospitable as it is. I can't imagine how they'd fare if they lost a food source. And, personally..." he glances out the window, at the moon fading in the morning sun. "...I have a really, really awful feeling about this. I don't think this is going to be a regular request."

OOC NOTES
Welcome, Southern wizards (and witch), to your mission!

Missions are mod-guided events that are partial CYOA, partial play-by-post instances. In general, you are free to interact with a scene as you please, and the mod will tell you how the scene reacts as a consequence of your actions. Some scenes will allow for more flexible threading, such as exploration or conversation, while some scenes will require strict turn order to preserve rounds, such as combat or other time-sensitive conflict. The mod will inform you if strict turn order is required at the start of a scene. Regardless, always be sure to bold any important actions you take.

This mission has been specifically tailored to Southern disposition, attitudes, and magic. If you find yourself struggling to tackle a situation, refresh yourself on the description of the South on the locations page, and make sure to confer with your teammates too! But you've been assigned South—we don't need to remind you of that, do we?

As a bonus, here's your theme music!

You will have until 11:59 AM EDT on Saturday, April 20 to reach a conclusion for this mission. Good luck!

[ That is definitely anxiety they feel as they pass the threshold, but they grip their broom and press onward. It'll be fine, it'll be fine...

So... the grasp of the weed was the least of Comet's problems here. It's also not a weed in the first place, from what they can see. Sorry there corrupted wheat.

Then the dread comes over them as they pass over the center... And whoof.thanks nat 20 for letting them press on and see something important, but they got that warning.

I think it's telling that when they get back to Bruno and Day, it's in a very wide arc around the hole. Like, they have to see normalish wheat beneath them and their broom.

They slip off their broom when they reach the two, and... They look a bit spooked, holding their arms. Just a bit of leftover dread. ]

...There's something glowing in the dirt in the center, and it's very bad. It makes everything near it bad.

[ Comet had left too quickly before Day could even try to protest, so all he could do was just watch them go and hope nothing happened to them (and if it did, get ready to test his broom skills).

...That said, he can tell they're still spooked even when they come back safely. ]

You okay, Comet? [ He'll address what they've found out in a bit. ]

I think so. It just felt terrible to fly over it.

[ They got... Very lucky. All hail the nat20. ]

[ C'mon, Day, it's possible to protest after the fact, too. ]

Comet! Don't just do things like that! We... we were planning on not going over that thing!

Oh, were you...? Sorry.

[ They don't really have an excuse, they just overheard getting a better look by flying above and was like.

"Okay will do. Bye!"

They do feel bad though, the apology is sincere. ]

What I thought was a weed is actually the wheat, by the way. They look like that the closer to the center thing you get.

[ Day, pretending he wasn't thinking of doing it himself because it's a moot point now (is it, really): ]

At least you made out of it okay. But this is... [ "Looking pretty bad", except he feels like opening like that isn't a good foot to get this off with. ] I've got some ideas on how we could handle this, just ain't sure if they're on the right track.

[ Kids... please... (okay, maybe Day isn't a kid but he looks younger than Bruno shush). ]

Look, can we just get this sample and leave? I'm gonna have a heart attack if any of us risk getting eaten by the evil wheat hole here, okay?

[ Excuse him while he sets the bag on the ground and rolls its top so it remains open. Inching closer to the circle, clooooser, just close enough that he can reach it with the shovel, and he'll dig into it to retrieve that soil sample. ]

Of course. This is something we should discuss with the others before anything else... and maybe they have helpful info from town.

[ Time to gather some healthy wheat to go along with the sick wheat. ]
